How to sign up for the 'Shadowrun' Beta

The fine folks over at FASA Studios have just opened up a public beta for ‘Shadowrun’ and they asked me to spread the word. This is for the Xbox 360 version, and since it is a Multiplayer Beta you will need to be a Gold member subscriber to participate.

Ready to apply? Here ya go:
1. Visit the beta Web site at http://connect.microsoft.com.

2. Click on "Invitations" on the left-side menu.

3. You will need to sign in using a valid Windows Live ID before you can continue to the "Invitations" page. (If you have already registered for the Connect site, skip to Step 5.)

4. Please read and accept the Terms of Use Agreement then follow the instructions to register for the Connect site.5. Enter your Invitation ID in the blank field. Your invitation ID is: SHBS-6YMT-YKHC6. Click "Go."

7. Complete and submit the short questionnaire. Please enter MAJOR1 for the beta code when asked at the beginning of the questionnaire.

8. If you are not redirected immediately to the Shadowrun Beta Selection homepage after completing the questionnaire, click the My Participations link on the left hand navigation bar and then click the Shadowrun program link. This will redirect you to the Shadowrun Beta Selection Homepage.

9. Once you are on the Shadowrun Beta Selection Homepage, you will need to complete the rest of the registration process by signing up for the forums by clicking the Join the Forums button then click the Welcome to the Official Shadowrun Community Forum Sign In button.

10. Wait patiently for us to contact you with further instructions.

Being a video game developer (I develop for both, Playstation 3 and Xbox 360) people ask me almost daily which platform I think is better. These are my personal feelings, in no way does this reflect my employer. Short answer: Xbox 360. Long answer: Price, performance, visual quality, game selection and online support. I think the Xbox 360 wins in every category.Price: This is obvious; the Xbox 360 core is only $299. The PS3 is around $499 for the 20GB version. It comes with a hard drive, but you don't need a hard drive to enjoy a lot of great games on the 360 so I think it's fair to compare both core systems.Performance: On paper, the PS3 is more powerful. In reality, it's quite inferior to the 360. Without getting into too many details, the three general-purpose CPU's the xbox360 has are currently FAR easier to take advantage of than the SPU's on the PS3. I suspect a few years down the road some high budget, first party PS3 exclusive titles will come out that really take advantage of the SPU's and do things the Xbox 360 can't, but I don't think the console is worth buying based on this speculation (for some it will be though, we'll have to wait and see how these games turn out).Graphics: The Xbox 360 is a clear winner. The GPU is more powerful. It has more powerful fillrate, and far more pixel and vertex processing horsepower. Part of the reason is their choice of memory, and architecture of pixel and vertex procesing. I can't get into details but the same vertex shader will run much slower on the PS3 than the Xbox 360. The 360 also has a clever new way rendering high definition anti aliased back buffers. To accomplish the same effect on PS3 is prohibitively expensive. For this reason I think many games will have no choice but to run in non-HD resolutions on the PS3 version, use a lower quality anti aliasing technique, or do back buffer upscaling. The end result in all cases is going to be noticeably worse image quality.Game Selection: The Xbox 360 has a huge head start here. 1 year is an eternity in gaming. Almost all multi-platform developers have made the Xbox 360 their primary platform due to timing of release-to-market, this means the games will look and perform better on the 360. The PS3 versions will be ports of the 360 versions. (The opposite was true for XBOX 1 vs. PS2). The Xbox 360 is also far faster to develop for due to better development tools (massively popular Visual Studio .NET vs. proprietary, buggy PS3 compiler and debugger), better documentation, and easier architecture (3 general purpose CPU's vs. 8 specialized processors that require DMA). Timing has also caused all next-gen middleware developers to make Xbox 360 their primary platform, and they will 'add ps3 support' as needed. This support will probably be inferior to the Xbox 360's due to manpower and more importantly, demand. It's this catch-22 now that will continue to drive the 360 forward and hold PS3 back.

We have to say, it's flippin' sweet. Even the lighting in the photograph is topnotch. The left side of the case (at right) features a cut away window with the HL2 logo in the corner. The right side features another logo which is raised off the surface of the case. All in all, it's some very impressive work. There is no denying that the Half-Life 2 megapackage coming to the 360 is worth celebrating, but we hope we won't upset PiNPOiNT when we remind him that the game was delayed. Hopefully, his spiffy mod will brighten his days until the game releases this summer. Check out bigger, beefier images after the break.

So, you may have spotted (via NeoGAF, among other places) that GameTrailers has posted an XNA promotional video [.WMV], showing off some of the games developed with Microsoft's developer tool being initially aimed toward amateur creators.
But a little commentary is required on what you see there, I think - stuff like Particle Wars is genuinely created by homebrew types, but - oh, hey, Major Nelson (the original poster) has linked to a post at the Let's Kill Dave! blog from one of the XNA architects explaining it much better!
Dave says: "The video opens showcasing a few cool community games. In the video, you'll see the Blobbit Dash game from Cheeky's site, Sharky's Air Legends, and Particle Wars. Then we shift into gears with the Culture demo, which is slated to be a future starter kit. This was the game that really knocked people out at GDC 2006 (and a very family friendly game to boot!). That is followed by Pocket Jongg (another starter kit coming) and the mesmerizing Pickture."
Next: "Then we shift into high gear showcasing Garage Game's two ventures. The first is a quick peek at Marble Blast Ultra, which was migrated to XNA from the original Torque Engine in just a couple of weeks. Then you see the amazing "drag and drop" abilities of TorqueX, which is the venerable Torque Engine, reenginered for XNA. Really amazing work by a great team of developers whose single-minded focus is helping you build great games REALLY fast."
Finally: "We then shift to Spacewar, our flagship game and homage to the game that started the entire industry.
