CES News for 360: IPTV, 10M+ units sold, 5M Live Subs
Lots of links, here's one from the local Seattle Times.
Ten million units sold wasn't a surprise, the holiday bump does wonders. It'll be interesting to see what sort of momentum that gives the system into next holiday. Holiday 2007 is where the great "war" will really be decided. That's when all the systems will be easy to find at retail, and the second to third generation of games (depending on system) will be showing off what they're capable of. It may come down to system exclusives, and those are getting rarer and rarer to find this generation.
I'm really looking forward to more details on the IPTV functionality being announced so we can have a real conversation about it. For now, just the potential of set top boxes being replaced by 360s that can both play games and act as a PVR has me salivating. I'm a tech geek, yes, but I'm not thrilled by the preponderence of boxes in my A/V stack. Would love to have a single box to tune digital TV, watch DVD/HD-DVD, and of course, play games. It's also interesting to think about what affect having a set top box that plays 360 games might have on traditional non-gamers. One can hope the box might act as a gateway - perhaps through Arcade - and allow people to try games who might not have otherwise.
And five million Live subscribers? What's to say? Over half of 360s are connected and online, compared to around 10% for the original Xbox. Whether or not you're a fan of online gaming, the ability to stay connected to the community and friends is huge in my book. And as you learn more about Live Anywhere, all of those connected people will become all the more valuable to you. It's going to be a fun year!

The second Xbox 360 revealed: codename Zephyr
Posted Jan 5th 2007 8:51AM by Ryan Block
Ever wonder why Microsoft hasn't released an HDMI cable for the Xbox 360, or whether the AV port was really capable of digital out? Well, here's your answer: we landed pictures of what appears to be the second Xbox 360 -- the Xbox 360 v2, if you will -- codenamed Zephyr. (The original Xbox 360, if you recall, was codenamed Xenon.) The long rumored about and awaited update to the console won't just feature a new, cooler 65nm processor, it's also finally added an HDMI port for full digital 1080p pleasure, as well as a 120GB drive, just what the doctor ordered. The 120GB drive may or may not come bundled with the kit, we don't yet know, just as we also don't yet know how much a Zephyr 360 is going to run (we imagine it'll go for the same price as currently so they can keep up a little on their expanding margin). But our very kind Xbox insider seemed happy to let us know we'd be able to get them "soon."

Rumor: Tekken 6 on Xbox 360 [update 1]
Read
Stirred by Sega's announcement of an Xbox 360 version of Virtua Fighter 5, comes rumor that Tekken 6 is also bound for Microsoft's console. The source of the rumor is the same anonymous "IGN insider" who has been apparently credited with breaking the Virtua Fighter 5 news before Sega confirmed it. If his latest spill proves valid, expect Namco Bandai's next Tekken on 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year. There is no indication that this multiplatform initiative would extend to the recently released downloadable version of Tekken 5: Dark Resurrection, which looks to remain a PS3 exclusive.
While console versions of the Tekken series have traditionally be reserved for Sony platforms, Tekken 3was eventually released for DreamcastTekken 3 was emulated on Dreamcast; and Tekken Advance was specifically designed and released for Game Boy Advance. If Tekken 6 does land on Xbox 360, the move is not unprecedented.

First footage: Xbox Live Arcade Worms
GameTrailers has posted the first gameplay video (embedded below) of a near-complete version of Worms for Xbox Live Arcade. As expected, Team17's latest entry returns the series to classic 2D gameplay (as Open Warfare did on DS and PSP last spring). The new Worms will be presented in widescreen and looks to make use of a familiar weapon set (see above); although planned content downloads could boost the game's arsenal.

What will the Xbox 720 be like?
By Jack Schofield / Gaming/ Microsoft 04:33pm
With the Xbox 360 basically out of the door, there must be a team inside Microsoft that is already working on the next machines. That will be mainly down to Microsoft chip designers such as Larry Yang, Jeff Andrews and Nick Baker, who used to work for futuristic console company 3DO. (I believe Larry Yang also worked at Sun on the Sparc.)
There could well be an Xbox 360 II a couple of years down the line. This will be cost-reduced using fewer chips -- all console manufacturers do this. If it gets the volume, Microsoft -- which owns the rights to the CPU and graphics chips -- might also look for lower-cost fabs than its current suppliers, IBM and Chartered Semiconductor. It will also have the option to chuck in an HD-DVD or Blu-ray drive, since this wouldn't change the games. However, since no one has any movies on Blu-ray, and hardly anyone has an HDTV, this isn't exactly urgent.
After that there will be the Xbox 370 or 720 or whatever, which will presumably use a compatible processor and have better graphics, but what else do gamers need? The "law of diminishing returns" is already setting in....
But you can be sure the Xbox 360 isn't the end of the line. If it tanks, "We'll play again," Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates told Reuters in a telephone interview just before of the Xbox 360 launch.
Remember, Microsoft has $40 billion in the bank, plus $1 billion a month in profits, and nothing to spend it on. In December, Microsoft gave $30 billion back to shareholders in a one-off distribution of wealth, and it's disposing of another $30 billion buying back its own stock. Under the circumstances, it can easily afford to invest (or,if you prefer, lose) the odd billion a year in winning the console market. Over the next 10 to 20 years, the potential pay-off could be huge.
If the Xbox was just a games machine, Microsoft might not care. If it's a vehicle for music, movies, online gaming and online shopping -- and a way of extending Microsoft's proprietary media formats into the living room -- then you can bet it does.

Xbox360 Topped Hardware Sales Over Christmas
To noone's surprise, it seems that the Xbox360 was the top selling hardware this past Christmas season. This is certainly due to the extreme Wii and Playstation 3 shortages, as the 2007 progresses we will see just who is the real front runner.

MS Sued Over Halo Mobile Game
It seems MS just cannot stay out of court. MS is now being sued by the French company Infusio for wrongful termination of a $2 million dollar contract. Infusio claims MS refuses to approve its game designs, thus wrongfully withholding the second of four $500,000 USD payments.

Battlestar Galactica MMO Coming Exclusively To Xbox360
It seems that Vivendi has confirmed that there is a BSG MMO on the way to Xbox360 consoles. The announcement comes hot on the heels of the Firefly MMO (created by Multiverse), and should hit console in 2008. Just how many MMO games can the gaming public take?
